In Scotland people used to called advocate as barrister. Barrister represents individuals or organizations in court and gives advice to their clients. Barrister involved in case once if it needed by the client. They have a right to represent people in higher courts. Although barristers primarily regulated by the bar standards board, role of Inns is important in their training and education. If you want to be a barrister you have been called to the bar by an Inn of court. In London inns provide important library, training and dining facility. As comparative barristers have less contact with clients than solicitors. To provide special advice on point of law barristers are engaged by the solicitors. Very rarely barristers instructed by clients directly. On behalf of clients solicitors instruct the barrister.

Qualities which barrister should have:-

  • He should have high level academic ability.
  • He should be interested in law and research
  • He should have good communication and writing skill.

There is difference between barrister and solicitor. For legal purpose solicitors can act in place of client means you can say that solicitors are an attorney. In case of barristers they are not attorney. Barrister can speak in court on behalf of clients when it’s instructed by the solicitor. This function explains the practical difference between the two professions.
To become a queen’s counsel very experienced barristers can apply and then they can be a high court judge or Court of Session. Some may move in to commerce or industry or may enter other senior position.
Barristers are legal adviser and court room advocates. They have knowledge and experience in and out of court which makes the difference to the output of the case. Barristers are individual and they advice client about strength and weakness of their case. Mostly civil cases are settled out of court and barrister’s instructions strengthen the client’s hand at negotiation. Barrister training creates a big difference in output of case.
